The Friday of the Book Sale is an exclusive shopping experience that is a benefit to those who purchased or were gifted a paid membership to the Friends of the Metropolitan Library System.
For the upcoming 2025 Book Sale, memberships must be purchased by January 31 to receive the benefit of tickets to the Friday pre-Book Sale shopping experience.
On Saturday and Sunday, the sale is free and open for anyone to attend!
On Sunday morning, the Book Sale offers sensory shopping for older adults and those guests who need more time and less noise. Attendance will be limited to 500 guests on Sunday from 9 a.m. to noon. There will be no loud announcements at this time and noise will be kept to a minimum.
Parking at the Fairgrounds is free and open on a first come, first served basis.
Vehicles in no parking zones are subject to tow.
You may “rent” a hand truck/dolly with the personal collateral of your stated ID card. You can use the dolly to help you transport items from the Oklahoma Expo Building to the curb to load your vehicle.
As a reminder, vehicles in no parking zones are subject to tow.
Strollers, chairs, wagons with wheels – as long as people or service animals occupying them – are allowed.
We prefer that you bring a tote bag for carrying your purchases through the sale. Should you bring a cart, boxes on wheels, or a suitcase, we ask that the item is not any larger than another imaginary human beside you. Please do not open the suitcase, unload carts, or play “book Tetris” in the aisles.
Items are sorted into two rooms, each with its own entrance and exit to the lobby of the Oklahoma Expo Building.
The Better Books Room is a smaller room on the south end of the building. The books in this room are usually in better condition. This room also has sheet music, puzzles, games, and more of the older or collectible items we have for sale. All items in the Better Books Room are individually priced.
The General Room is the bigger room on the north end of the building. This room has our largest paperback selection along with audio/visual items. Items in this room are priced based on the item type.
Items in both the Better Books Room and General Room are sorted by genre. Please visit the Information Booth for the balloon legend that indicates the color-coded balloons over the tables to identify where specific categories can be found.
Our motivated Sort Site volunteers process a minimum of 500,000 items year-round and therefore we are unable to store and display items alphabetically by author or title.
You must pay for all items in each room before leaving that room.
We accept all forms of credit and debit cards as well as cash. While the Friends of the Metropolitan Library System is a 501c3 nonprofit, we are also a licensed used book reseller in Oklahoma City and will collect sales tax at the point of sale as required by state and city law. You can also choose to round up your purchase total to donate to the Friends, just tell your volunteer cashier to “Round Me Up!”
In each checkout line there is a point of no return where shoppers must have items that they intend to purchase tallied before continuing. This helps the lines move faster! If there are items you do not want to purchase, please return them to the appropriate area or place them in the appropriate area.
If you are looking to purchase 100 or more items, please refer to the guidelines below on how to checkout.
We will hold your purchased items from either room in the Lobby Holding area. We will hold these items under your name until the end of the sale.
If items are not claimed, we will attempt to contact you using the information you provided when you placed the items in holding. If items are unclaimed 30 days past the end of our sale they will be returned to our inventory.
We will hold unpaid items in the General Holding area inside the General Room until the close of the sale each day. You can store your “to be purchased” items under your name and then re-evaluate your total purchase before heading to check out.
If you have more than 100 items, please see our Large Volume Buyer information below.
At the close of the Book Sale each day, any unclaimed items will be returned to the tables.
There is no General Holding area inside the Better Books Room.
Book and media resellers are welcome at the Book Sale.
We understand that many regional individuals and businesses also buy items in large volume for their own personal and professional use. We have implemented the guidelines below for those who show in large quantities, so that all guests at the Book Sale can enjoy the shopping experience. Guests who do not follow follow shopping guidelines will be asked to leave.
Scanning is permitted. Items must be returned neatly to approximate location where it was selected from.
Please note, our inventory is reviewed by our pricing experts. We also have an Amazon store and eBay store.
We want everyone to be able to move through the sale and browse at their pace. You will be asked to clear the aisle and more your items to holding or checkout immediately if you are blocking aisles or sections.
If you cannot move your load of items independently in one trip, you will be asked to move all items to holding or checkout to help avoid congestion.
When you have reached 100 items or more that you wish to purchase in the General Room, please head to the holding section in the corner of the room to have your books held by name until you are ready to check out and pay.
All items in the General Room must be sorted and tallied with the intent to purchase before entering the checkout line.
If you need assistance with counting or recounting your items, please ask a volunteer.
When you have 100 or more items in the Better Books Room, please head to the checkout line.
Please move to the checkout line at least 30 minutes before the Book Sale ends, when the announcement is made. A volunteer may assist moving your items to checkout area at this time.
Tally sheets in the General Room are subject to review by volunteers and/or security as proof of purchase.
We are grateful for your large purchases. Please join us in the mission of keeping the sale fun, friendly and uncluttered for everyone by following the above guidelines.
As a reminder, shoppers who do not comply with volunteer requests or abide by the guidelines will be escorted from the sale by security.
Children are always welcome at the sale.
Children, ages 12 and up, will need a ticket to attend the members only shopping experience on Friday.
The OKC Fairgrounds plan to offer concessions at the event. These items are available for purchase and they are independent of the Book Sale.
Restrooms are located on the south end of the lobby near the Better Books Room or on the west end of the General Room.
The Friends of the Metropolitan Library are not responsible for lost or unattended items.
The Lost and Found (including people!) is located at the Information Booth in the General Room near the entrance.
First Aid volunteers and a paid EMT will be on site during the sale hours.
Please see a volunteer in a brightly colored shirt or check in at the Information Booth for assistance regarding first aid.
Information about volunteering can be shared at the Information Booth or by email to friends@metrolibrary.org.
Feedback about the Book Sale can be shared at the Information Booth in the General Room or by email to friends@metrolibrary.org.
The Friends of the Metropolitan Library System Book Sale is 100% dependent on volunteers.
If you see a volunteer, be sure to thank them. And if you’re interested in becoming a volunteer for a future Book Sale, please ask someone for more information!
The Sort Site will not be accepting donations at this time and will reopen on Monday, July 1.
