Donate Materials

What to Give:

Our book sales thrive on your donations! Please make sure that the items you are donating are in good condition and are contained in clean boxes or bags that can easily be carried or stacked. Good condition means that the materials have covers (books) or cases (audio) and are in usable condition free from mildew, insects, strong odors and other damage.  Due to space limitations we cannot take more than one medium sized box of the same title without prior approval – this includes all new or used, self-printed, or published books. Thank you for your understanding.

We accept the following items:

  • Books
  • Music or Audio CDs
  • Gaming Systems and Video Games
  • eReaders
  • DVDs
  • Vinyl Records
  • Magazines* (please see what we do not accept)

We no longer accept donations of the following items:

  • Audio cassettes (books or music)
  • VHS cassettes
  • Encyclopedia sets (complete or partial) with a publication date of 5 years or older
  • Medical textbooks or medical journals with a publication date of 5 years or older
  • Law textbooks or books of law statues with a publication date of 4 years or older
  • Weekly publication magazines
  • Newspapers
  • Readers’ Digest condensed book collections.
  • No more than one carry-able box of items of the same title without prior approval. Large quantities of new or used self-printed or published books will no longer be accepted at the Sort Site.

How to Give:

To preserve the health of our volunteers, the Friends currently do not provide a pick-up service for donated items.

Small quantities of no more than 2 sturdy boxes can be taken to your local Metropolitan Library location.

Large quantities, such as more than 3 boxes or a car/truck load, can be taken to our used books Sort Site at 300 NE 50th Street, Oklahoma City from 9am to Noon on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays. To speak with a volunteer about a donation for booksale purposes, please call (405) 236-4734 during the above hours.

We reserve the right to refuse any donation. Please refrain from dumping materials.

Upcoming Donation Drives!

Stay tuned for upcoming Saturday Donation Drives Dates after our February 2025 book sale event. Due to capacity, we will not be able to have another donation drive before our sale event.

How to Report:

When you donate, you will receive a tax receipt slip. The receipt will state you donated items on a specific date at a specific location. Per IRS regulations, it is the responsibility of the donor to document their donation and estimate its fair market value. Therefore, the receipt will not provide details on the quantity or value of the items donated. Once you have received the tax receipt slip you will want to keep it with your documentation of items donated and other documents for your taxes. The Friends of the Library will not retain a copy of this receipt.

YOU are what makes our booksale one of the largest in the nation. Thank you for recycling your materials back into our community and helping our libraries grow!

The Metropolitan Library System does not accept donations of materials to be added to library shelves or to be displayed in libraries without approval of the Metropolitan Library Commission. To speak with a member of library staff about a donation you have made or would like to make, please call (405) 606-3760.
